WWE Superstar Darren Young’s decision to come out of the closet has prompted praise from members of the wrestling community and RumorFix has all the reaction.
The immensely popular wrestler told TMZ, “I’m a WWE Superstar and to be honest with you, I’ll tell you right now I’m gay and I’m happy — very happy.”
Reaction from the WWE was swift.
The organization issued this statement: “WWE is proud of Darren Young for being open about his sexuality, and we will continue to support him as a WWE Superstar. Today, in fact, Darren will be participating in one of our Be A Star anti-bullying rallies in Los Angeles to teach children how to create positive environments for everyone regardless of age, race, religion or sexual orientation.”
Stephanie McMahon, EVP of WWE, tweeted her congratulations and so did her husband, Triple H, who wrote, “Congratulations, @DarrenYoungWWE for living YOUR life, YOUR way. #proud.”
Chavo Guerrero called Darren, “Great guy & great wrestler” and Matt Morgan praised his “enormous courage.”
Darren, whose real name is Frederick Rosser, says he wants to inspire others.
“I’m hoping to be able to make a difference,” he said. “It’s very important to me that people understand that someone’s sexual preference shouldn’t really matter. It should be about the person.”
Darren, who has been on the WWE roster for three years, says he doesn’t expect much to change with his public announcement.
“To be honest with you, when I come to work, I come to work. This is business. I’m a WWE Superstar. I’m there to entertain the WWE Universe and that’s what my job is to do and I do it well,” he said.
