In typical dramatic fashion, Grechen Rossi turns the tables and proposes to long time boyfriend Slade Smiley on this week’s episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County. Gretchen plans the most elaborate proposal filled with with helicopters, a rooftop party and even a male engagement band.
It all starts with a love song Gretchen wrote and recorded for him in secret which his radio show co-host Kelly Jones mysteriously announces she will play for him during their morning talk radio show. Slade looks appropriately confused until he finally figures out it is his Gretchen singing and he starts to cry.
Kelly also wipes away tears as she hands a truly shocked looking Slade his tuxedo and a love note from Gretchen. After he changes into his formal wear, she then directs him outside to a waiting limo where he is whisked away to a helicopter that is waiting to take him to his girlfriend. While Slade is flying through the air toward his love, Gretchen is busy with the final touches of her glittery surprise engagement party at the top of a very tall building with breath taking views of downtown Los Angeles.
She invited all of their closest friends and family, and we see plenty of giant photos of Gretchen and Slade in various forms of dress, from formal wear to bathing suit shots, decorating the classy party space. Interestingly, none of the ladies made the guest list because Gretchen is now the odd one out and all the ladies are mad at her for one reason or another lately.
It did not help that on his radio show a few days earlier Slade gossiped about someone in their social group (but we all know he meant Vicki Gunvalson) as “Tupperware face” referring to all the recent plastic surgery she just had. The ladies were horrified and think that Slade is evil for once again calling another woman out on her looks.
In a hilarious moment Alexis Bellino tries to comfort her friend Vicki after hearing the radio show together and says “I know you were swollen for a couple of weeks … but look at you now!”
Back to the party, a nervous Gretchen gets a pep talk from her mother about how great a man Slade turned out to be for her and then Gretchen announces to her guests that she is off to the roof where the helicopter will deposit Slade and she will find out if he accepts her proposal.
The next scene is reminiscent of a Bachelor episode where Slade and Gretchen meet on the rooftop and each start crying and Gretchen professes her love and Slade (who didn’t get the memo) actually gets down on one knee to say it would be an honor and a privilege to marry her. They hug and kiss and it’s all quite extravagant as they go back down to the party and mingle with their loved ones.
A few days later Vicki hosts a winter wonderland themed party to show off her newly post-divorce redecorated home. But curiously enough, no one can see the inside of the home because the party is being held outside (hey, this is southern California) amidst lots of fake snow and fake penguins floating in her pool.
She did wind up inviting Slade and Gretchen, with the sole purpose of confronting Slade on his nasty comments, however even though they are attending the party, they have decided to keep their engagement a secret so as to not have the ladies spoil their moment with negativity. Before they arrive, Vicki huddles together with the ladies on the couch and tells them that her and Brooks Ayers are back together and are going to prove everyone wrong, only she has not told her Brooks-hating daughter Briana this news yet.
